After realizing the dramatical results of iodine defficiency, an evaluation for adding iodine into the foodstuffs has begun and finally decision on adding iodine into the salt was made. With the leadership of WHO (World Health Organization), non-profit organizations such as UNICEFF and ICIDD (International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders) have taken roles in campains of “iodized salt”.
More than 70 countries around the world are following programs for iodized salt. Nearly all countries have different levels of iodine depending on the consumption quantities. For Turkey the limit is 25-40mg/kg. It is forbidden to market non-iodized salt in Turkey. For the individuals that should not consume iodine, maximum volume of 250g packages may be sold.
